Akau Tangi

It was great to get back to Akau Tangi for a day of sports. We used a Growth Mindset by trying new things and getting stuck in. Trying new sports is beneficial for our bodies and minds! When you learn new things, your brain grows. When you process a positive experience it enhances Positive Emotions too!

Thank you to Lext for putting this movie trailer together:

Miramar Rangers - Football Tournament

On Wednesday our eager Year 3 and 4 tamariki had the opportunity to head to Miramar Park and compete against other schools in the Miramar Rangers Football tournament.

Students improved their football skills, practiced working in a team and demonstrating good sportsmanship. They had the talented Miramar Rangers Football coaches there to support.

Walking from Cape Reinga to Bluff!

This is the Year 3 and 4 students on our walk

School Kits challenged us to walk the length of New Zealand in a day! We needed 278 people, walking 10,000 steps each to walk from Cape Reinga to Bluff. We reached out to the community to ask you to "donate" 10,000 steps. We also did our own walk (it wasn't quite 10,000 steps but we know that we would've done 10,000 each by the end of the day!)

This activity was designed to help us connect with the community and to promote healthy activity.

Thank you to everyone for your donations. We made it! Now for a holiday...

African Dance--trying new things and growing our minds and bodies

We were lucky to have Naby visit us and teach us some traditional West African dance, drumming and singing.   First he showed us some dance, then we sang some songs, practised dancing and then learned a bit about the drums.  He showed us three different drumming sounds.  He explained that the sounds are like a family there is the deep sound which he called the Daddy, a slightly higher one that is called the Mommy and the highest sound was the baby.
Each class had a turn at trying the dance and then the teachers did it too!

The dancing and drumming were really good for our maths because we had to count the beats.
1,2,3, 1,2,3, 1,2,3,4, 5,6,7,8

Learning about African Dance was really good for us to be able to see how different places, people and cultures sing and dance and for us to give something new a try.  Everyone did give it a try and we know that when we try new things we grow our brains! Music and dancing are also really great for our wellbeing and link to our positive health curriculum.  Singing and dancing out in the sunshine and with the birds was lots of fun and got us moving and grooving!

Cross Country Training Begins...

Today we started to think about our goals for our school cross country. We are learning to pace ourselves so that we can complete the run.

Fabulous Football

Today in our soccer training we played trucks and trailers. Someone was the truck and someone was the trailer. The trailer had to keep up with the truck. The truck had to loose the trailer. First, we played without balls and then with balls. This helped us learn how to control the ball and look out for people who might be tackling. We then played a game of football.

Ball Skills

Shared Writing by Hunter R, Rim, and Lily V:

We have been doing PE with Shona. We have been learning how to throw and catch balls. We've been learning to roll the ball to our partner and run back to where we were. We have also been bouncing the ball and throwing it into the air. We have been using balls in different ways. It's great to stay fit and use the outside space.
